Born from a conversation about the recurrence of leaving the rooms of lost loved ones untouched, our small team of four felt that one of the most impactful ways to highlight this issue of suicide, specifically teen suicide locally, was to bring their rooms to life to the wider public.
Partnering with Youthline, an integrated youth service whose mission is to provide a listening ear and effective support for anyone up to 35 years old, we reconstructed the rooms of three youths who have committed suicide: Zen Dylan Koh (17), Mitchell Ang (17) and Elisabeth Pauwels (18).
While the rest of the team worked on reconstructing Zen's room into a physical space for the public to learn about his life and be educated on mental health & wellbeing, I was responsible for memorialising all three youths’ rooms virtually on a website that shares their stories along with information about Youthline’s mental health services.
While the general direction was to incorporate handwritten script interspersed with mixed media as a way to reflect the youthful spirit, the website took a more restrained approach, since it was more important that the readers were able to get to know these teens through their photographical memories.
As such, I opted for a more subtle look, retaining the animated handwritten script font while immortalising their rooms in isometric forms and presenting the memories of these teens in organised expandable accordions.
